Myth Buster: Carpet Truth

If you are considering a carpet installation and all of a sudden people are giving you advice, read more to break down the real truths about carpet and separate fact from myth.  Carpet is a popular choice of floor covering in many homes, providing warmth, comfort and valuable home improvements.  Just like any other floor covering, knowing what to consider and what to look out for when shopping for carpet will help you make the best decision for your home and clear up any misconceptions.

Myth #1:  The thicker the carpet, the better.

Fact: Thicker carpet does provide a soft and cushiony feel, although it’s the density of the carpet that provides long lasting durability.  Quality carpet with a higher density will last longer than less dense carpet.  Compare the yarn per square inch of carpet samples to know which carries more density and will provide longer lasting resilience, regardless of the carpet thickness.

Myth #2: Carpet gives off harmful VOCs.

Fact: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are a hot topic in flooring manufacturing with new flooring products containing very low to no VOCs.  Harmful contaminants such as formaldehyde have not been used in carpet manufacturing since 1978.  Carpet is actually one of the lowest contributors of VOCs compared to other household environmental products, scoring lower than typical household wall paint.  The EPA has researched the topic and no evidence of adverse health effects from carpet is found.

Myth #3:  Carpet makes allergies worse.

Fact:  Carpet can actually improve air quality by trapping dust and allergens until vacuuming.  Using a vacuum with a HEPA filter will reduce stirring allergens up while vacuuming.  Frequent vacuuming with a HEPA filter vacuum can improve air quality for those who suffer with allergies.

Myth #4:  Carpet is difficult to maintain.

There are many things you can do to extend the longevity of your carpet.  Frequent vacuuming, especially in high traffic areas, is important to prevent dirt and debris from settling low in the pile of the carpet.  Professionally cleaning your carpets every 12 to 18 months in addition to frequent vacuuming will help to preserve your carpet’s appearance and feel.

Textured Wool Carpet Provides Long Lasting Soft Comfort

One of the most widely used carpet fibers in the world is wool, making textured wool carpet a material of choice to provide luxurious softness and comfort.  Wool carpet may be more expensive than other materials, but can last up to five decades with proper care.  Carpets made of wool are environmentally friendly, produced of natural fibers that are fully recyclable, and provide many benefits over synthetic fibers to those suffering with allergies.
Wool Carpet Benefits
There are many benefits to choosing textured wool carpet over other fiber types, making wool a desirable choice for many applications.  Some benefits of wool fiber carpets include:
  • Less irritation to allergy sufferers: wool is proven to provide less irritation to those suffering with allergy or breathing problems, as the fibers absorb suspended dust particles making them less likely to enter the lungs. Dust particles will remain on the surface where they are easily removed with vacuuming.
  • Long lasting shape retention: textured wool carpets will retain their shape and appearance for several decades as the fibers are coated with a thin membrane which prevents any dampness from seeping into the carpet.
  • Unparalleled softness of wool: wool carpet can be more costly than other synthetic fibers, although the fluffy, bouncy texture of wool carpets provides value with unparalleled softness that stands the test of time.
For all carpet fibers and types, the quality and durability of your carpet depends on the quality of the material and manufacturing process.  Great Western Flooring Company has more than 35 years of experience selecting and installing quality carpet manufactured by the best names in the industry. Price of Carpet Depends on Many Factors

New carpeting adds comfort, warmth and value to your home with several factors such as the carpet type, texture and manufacturer determining the price of carpet installation.  Some of the most important factors to consider when evaluating the price of carpet include the type and style, with many variations ranging from a low-end bargain carpet to a plush expensive style, with popular and more affordable styles in between.
The environment in which the carpet is installed must be taken into consideration when evaluating carpet prices.  A nylon, or loop carpet might be a good choice for a high traffic area such as a children’s room or busy living room.  There are many variations of nylon, olefin and polyester carpeting with a wide range of carpet prices, which make up the majority of residential carpet installations.  These synthetic carpet options offer many choices in texture and style, and it may be worth it to pay a little more now for the right type of carpet that will last for many years.  It is extremely important to purchase from a reputable carpet and flooring company, to ensure the quality of carpet manufacturing will provide the years of comfort you desire.

Modern Shag Carpets are Classy and Sophisticated

When you hear of Shag carpets, you may think of the of long shaggy carpets of the late 1970’s in greens and golds with multicolored textures.  Shag carpets have come a long way since then, with modern shag carpeting offering luxurious softness with a look of sophistication.
Shag carpeting is constructed with dense cable yarn making it extremely soft, which is desirable in upscale bedrooms for example, although the soft feel of shag creates a cozy warm feeling in any room.   The typical shag carpet is usually at least a one inch pile, so that the yarns lay randomly when exposed to foot traffic.
A shorter shag is a cut-pile plush usually a half an inch to three-quarters of an inch, with a little more density.  This is a shorter pile but gives a similar luxurious feel to the shag carpet, with the fibers still falling randomly with foot traffic.
Quality Shag Carpet Manufacturers
Shag carpet can come in any color imaginable, and when purchased from a reputable manufacturer you can rest assured that your carpet will provide the comfort and softness you desire for many years.
Quality carpet fibers are necessary for a quality carpet, and Great Western Flooring offers only the best in quality carpets and flooring.  Great Western Flooring has been installing quality carpets, flooring and countertops to commercial and residential customers in the Chicagoland area for over 35 years.

Match Your Carpet Pile to Your Carpet Purpose

The type of carpet pile refers to the carpet fiber density, and goes along with the height of the pile. This is measured from the surface of the carpet to the backing, where a flat pile refers to a short pile, and shaggy carpet would have a long pile.   Depending on the purpose of the carpeted room, and exposure to elements, high traffic areas and how long you want your carpet to last, the right pile can go a long way in the proper setting.   Conversely, the wrong choice in pile can lead to a much quicker wear and tear and the need to replace your carpet sooner than you would like.
Loop Pile
Loop Pile carpet has dense looped strands for a clean, low profile look.  This type of carpet construction is also quite durable, making it ideal for areas of high activity.  Looped pile carpet comes in various styles, including Berber, level loop, and multi-level loop for a variety of textures and options.  The loops in Berber carpet are made of thick bulky yarns of either wool, nylon or polypropylene, and can be either level loop, or multi-level loop.
Level Loop Pile
Level loop carpet pile is very durable and resistant to tracking as they are made with weaving even loops into the carpet backing.  Level loop pile carpet is densely packed making it easy to clean, and ideal for high traffic areas.
Multi-Level Loop Pile
Pile that is multi-level loop, is a loop with two to three varying heights in the pile, giving a textured look.  The variation in pile can provide a durable appearance, but the loops may be easy to snag.
Cut Pile
Cut Pile is like a loop pile, except the loops are cut at the top of the loop leaving the yarn bundles standing straight.  This is a very popular carpet pile, but is less resistant to crushing that the loop pile.  There are many variations of cut pile, including Saxony, Frieze and Twist.

Let the carpet professionals at Great Western Flooring help you determine the best types of carpet pile for your needs.  We have over 35 years of experience pleasing customers in Chicago and surrounding areas with high quality and low-cost flooring and countertops.  Contact us today for a free no-obligation quotation or stop by one of our showrooms to see how we can help you with your carpet new carpet installation.

How to Pick the Perfect Carpeting for a Home or Office

Carpeting is one of the largest investments you will make in your home or office, providing comfort and increasing your home’s value.  With so many choices in different carpet fibers and padding, how do you know where to begin?  The following are some basic tips in choosing the perfect carpeting for your home or office, providing the most benefits for your investment.
Work with a Reputable Retailer
For confidence in the quality of the carpeting you purchase, work with a reputable retailer to know for certain that the carpeting you purchase is truly what it is claimed to be.  A salesman from a budget store may try to convince you that their carpeting is just as good or maybe even the exact same thing, but the only way to know for sure is to work with a reputable carpet and flooring retailer.
Low budget carpeting may appear to look just as good, but if the carpet is not manufactured with high quality methods it could quickly fall apart, thus wasting all your effort and money.  For something as important as the comfort and value of your home, don’t risk being taken by a smooth-talking salesman, work with reputable retailers like Great Western Flooring.
For over 35 years Great Western Flooring has been adding comfort and value to homes and businesses with high quality, long lasting, beautiful and elegant carpeting and padding installed by experienced and professional carpet installers, at the most affordable price.
Know Your Specifications
To get the most value from your investment, you’ll want to know the specifications that you desire.  Is it for a room or hallway with high traffic?  You’ll want a strong fiber for a high traffic area to retain its resiliency.  If the room will be exposed to intense direct sunlight you’ll want a fiber that can withstand UV exposure and retain its durability.
If you have young children or pets you may prefer a carpeting like Shaw’s LifeGuard® carpet that will repel water protecting the carpet fibers and the floor beneath it.
Shaw has thousands of color and style combinations for any room design, no matter the size or décor.  Great Western Flooring is a proud retailer of Shaw quality carpeting and flooring, offering you an endless array of choices with textures, carpet fiber types and colors.
Let Great Western Flooring show you how easy it is to pick the perfect carpeting for your room, assuring your specifications are met, for total satisfaction and ultimate comfort.  Add value to your home and get a quick return on your investment with comfort and style.
